The shortlisted winners of the 2009 Communicators in Business CiB Awards have been announced. E42 magazine produced by Edge Hill, and designed by Splinter, is now guaranteed at least an award of excellence, which will be presented at the Awards Dinner held at the Hilton in Birmingham on Friday 22 May.
Splinter will be attending the ceremony with Mary Bernia project manager from Edge Hill. The other organisations in the Newsmagazine group are Serco, Tarmac UK, Lloyd’s and Hiscox.
This year’s awards celebrate CiB’s 60th anniversary. CiB aim to raise the standard of internal communication thinking, practice and delivery through professional development, debate, and shared insights.
Edge Hill’s public relations officer Mary Bernia said:
“I’m delighted that E42 has been recognised with this award, particularly from such strong field of competition. To receive such complimentary feedback from the judges was also really encouraging – design from Splinter was particularly singled out as an “outstanding feature” of the magazine. It shows the magazine is being well-received and its great news that the hard work of everyone involved on making E42 such a fantastic publication has really paid off.”

From over 300 agencies Splinter won a prestigious 3-year contract for Bolton Council. Scooping contracts for both Graphic design and Digital Media Production and Web Development services.
We look forward to working with the other 13 design agencies to promote the distinctive ‘DNA’ brand to the people, businesses and communities of Bolton and beyond.
No sooner had we put the phone down from talking with Bolton the Science Museum got in touch to say we’d made it on to the preferred suppliers list for a year long framework contract with a shared agency value of 500k. Splinter has been asked to tender to create some of the 40 computer-based interactive exhibits, experiences and films. The interactives will form part of a redevelopment of the popular and award winning biomedical gallery Who am I? opening in 2010.
The Science Museum is part of the National Museum of Science & Industry (NMSI), an umbrella name for three museums – the Science Museum, the National Media Museum and the National Railway Museum.
To coincide with the opening of National Museums Liverpool’s new Ancient Egypt gallery at World Museum Liverpool, Splinter were asked to produce a Flash game featuring some of the artefacts which are in the gallery.
‘Escape from the Mummy’s Tomb’ challenges you to step into the shoes of an avid explorer on an expedition to collect Egyptian artefacts. Along the way you’ll learn about the history of these artefacts and you may well cross paths with a crazed Mummy!
Built as a tile-based game in Flash, with custom-designed characters and scenes, we went for the full on adventurer theme and were able to finish it off nicely courtesy of David Occhino’s Indiana Jones font

Splinter has re-designed the Snowdonia Mountains and Coast ‘The Active Destination’ bilingual guide. Working with Gwynedd Council we produced the 80 page A5 document promoting the wide range of outdoor leisure activities available in the area.
We were selected by Gwynedd Council because of our experience of producing Welsh / English documents and our understanding, and creative interpretation, of their corporate guidelines. The high quality brochure promotes the activity tourism products within Snowdonia National Park, Llŷn Peninsula and Cambrian Coastline.
Just wanted to thank all at Splinter for all their efforts and patience in producing the Snowdonia Mountains and Coast’s activity brochure. The team was always helpful and very easy to work with. Splinter delivered on producing a modern, quirky, clean design, which has produced a visually exciting piece of marketing material for the Snowdonia Mountains and Coast area. It’s been accepted with open arms by all of us at the office and especially the area’s trade! Thank you and we hope to work together again in the near future.

Splinter are proud to announce that one of our gang, illustrator Stephen Chan, has beaten over 250 applicants to win the UK’s Don’t Panic poster competition. The competition is part of the PlayStation® Season and Manchester International Festival, the award is made even more prestigious as Stephen’s design was chosen by graphics guru/legend/master Peter Saville (www.designmuseum.org/design/peter-saville) who said:
The work questioned the subject [innovation] and posed multiple answers. Also it was one of the only works executed in a contemporary visual idiom, whereas a lot of the posters were styled using a retro aesthetic. I discounted these immediately as they weren’t innovative in style, even if the subject was attempting to be innovative.
